But it could have been a different outcome as Dean awarded a penalty to Cardiff when Mee handled in the box, only to then change his mind after consulting linesman Darren Cann.

When asked about the penalty decision by Dean, Warnock - who was charged by the FA this week for his controversial remarks following the Chelsea defeat in March - said: "I have no view at all thanks. I've already seen the FA three times this week.

"I'm disappointed, I'll be asking the referee obviously. Mike says it hit his head first, I'm sure I'll get the right story from all three of them.

"We're disappointed [Aron] Gunnarsson didn't get a penalty for being pulled down [in the second half]. He doesn't dive, but get were a little bit unlucky today."

Sean Dyche had a different view and felt Dean was right to award the spot-kick.

The Burnley manager told Sky Sports post-match: "I think they've come out with a right decision there. Tough one on Cardiff, but we've had a tough one ourselves this season. It's the right decision in the end."

Although Cardiff are now five points off Premier League safety after their third loss in a row, Warnock credited the way his players performed on an afternoon when they were 1-0 down until injury-time.

He added: "We're trying our hardest. I can't fault the lads. All the lads played well.

"We got to grips with it and especially in the second half we needed a bit more devilment around the box.

"Once they got in front they did they try and catch you on the break.

"We played quite well when we were a goal down and it [the penalty] would have given us a massive lift in the second half, but my lads keep getting kicked in the teeth time and time again this season and I've nothing but credit for them the way they carry on.

"There's still a chance. I might be smiling but I'm gutted underneath."
