England failed to avenge their World Cup semi-final defeat in an eerie Nations League encounter behind closed doors in Rijeka.

Former England and Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland watched the game for Sky Sports News - and he gave each of England's players a rating out of 10...

Jordan Pickford: 6

Pi

He was comfortable and didn't have a lot to do. There was one scare when an effort flew just wide of the post, but all you want as a goalkeeper is a clean sheet, happy days. I was with him at Preston and I was impressed every day with his attitude and ability.

Kyle Walker: 6

during the UEFA Nations League A Group Four match between Croatia and England at Stadion HNK Rijeka on October 12, 2018 in Rijeka, Croatia. The match is due to be played behind closed doors.

He was very quiet. We're usually accustomed to him flying down the right flank - he only got in a couple of times which isn't enough for him. Walker is a brilliant player, there's not much between him and Kieran Trippier. It's a nice headache for Gareth Southgate.

The whole back four wasn't tested. Stones and Maguire both dealt with Croatia's threat.

England's man of the match. He looked very comfortable on this stage, providing an option going forward and making some brilliant tackles when danger was lurking. He should be proud of his performance. If he plays well against Spain, then Danny Rose and Luke Shaw might be behind him in the pecking order. He could establish himself as the first choice.

They provided good energy at times but perhaps didn't service the attackers with the right ball. This was the case in the first half.

Ross Barkley: 6.5

during the UEFA Nations League A Group Four match between Croatia and England at Stadion HNK Rijeka on October 12, 2018 in Rijeka, Croatia. The match is due to be played behind closed doors.

Both teams nullified each other in midfield but Barkley did show glimpses of quality, especially in the second half.

Raheem Sterling: 5.5

He didn't get on the ball enough - I know the service wasn't there for him as it was a scrappy game. He struggled slightly. It's hard to mark him high when he didn't get much of the ball in dangerous areas.

Marcus Rashford: 6

It's hard to mark him too as he had two fantastic chances but missed them both. Credit him for getting into those positions but he'll be disappointed not to be the match-winner.

Harry Kane: 6

He was quiet. However, he was unlucky with his header that came off the bar.

Jadon Sancho: 7

Jadon Sancho comes on for his England debut, replacing Raheem Sterling

I would possibly throw Sancho in from the start against Spain - he's started the season brilliantly in Germany and looked confident in his cameo. I love his directness and he created chances. I'd have no qualms about starting him.
