Joe Gomez has returned to Liverpool for assessment on an ankle injury sustained during England’s victory over the Netherlands on Friday night.

The Liverpool defender was replaced by Harry Maguire less than 10 minutes into the 1-0 win for England in Amsterdam, after landing awkwardly following an aerial duel.

England have no plans to call up a replacement for Tuesday's fixture against Italy at Wembley.

A statement from England read: "Joe Gomez has withdrawn from the England squad and returned to Liverpool for further assessment by his club's medical team.

"It follows an ankle injury sustained during the Three Lions' 1-0 win over the Netherlands on Friday.
