Chelsea defender Baba Rahman is out for the season after suffering a serious knee injury playing for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Rahman tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Ghana's opening AFCON match against Uganda last week in Gabon.
The 22-year-old left-back is now facing an extended spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery in Germany.
Rahman cost Chelsea £21.7m in August 2015 and made 23 appearances before Antonio Conte agreed to loan him to Schalke at the beginning of this season.
Sources indicate there are no plans for him to return to London at present, and Chelsea will work closely with Schalke to decide the best location for his recovery.
