Gianfranco Zola is in talks with Inter Milan about taking over as head coach, according to Sky in Italy.

Inter sacked Frank de Boer this week after they won just four of their opening 11 Serie A games, leaving them 12th in the table.

They were beaten 1-0 away at Sampdoria last week, their fifth defeat of the season, and they are bottom of their Europa League group.

Youth team coach Stefano Vecchi is in temporary charge and his first game was Thursday's 2-1 defeat at Southampton in the Europa League.

Former Villarreal boss Marcelino is reported to have held meetings with Inter's Chinese owners earlier this week.

It is possible that Zola - who has enjoyed limited success as a coach - will be asked to be Marcelino's No 2, to give him an Italian-speaking No 2.
