Steven Gerrard has returned to Liverpool to continue his rehabilitation on a hamstring problem that has disrupted his MLS season with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Coach Bruce Arena confirmed the former England midfielder will miss Sunday's clash with Houston Dynamo and said he is unsure when the 36-year-old will be back in action.

"Steven had a re-occurrence of his hamstring injury. He's obviously out for a bit," Arena told Spectrum SportsNet.

"He could do at home what he could do here as well. It was OK for him to depart for a week or two."

Gerrard was reported to have been spotted outside Liverpool's training ground as Jurgen Klopp's side prepare to take on rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Monday Night Football.

Arena said the Galaxy will have to "wait and see" when Gerrard, who has scored three goals in 21 appearances this season, will return for LA, who have clinched an MLS Cup playoff berth.
