Manchester United Reserves lost 4-3 on penalties to Oldham on Tuesday night in the Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final after the tie had ended 1-1 at 90 minutes at the Leigh Sports Village.
Despite the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Adnan Januzaj, Andreas Pereira, James Wilson, Will Keane and Paddy McNair all having trained with the United Reserves during the past seven days, none featured against the Latics.
United took the lead after 35 minutes when Regan Poole's right-wing centre was volleyed home by American Matthew Olosunde for his first goal for the club.
However, Oldham levelled matters up early in the second period as Jake Cassidy's header at the far post was too powerful for United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, sending the tie to penalties.
In the shoot-out, though, United were made to rue misses by Scott McTominay and Demi Mitchell as Oldham advanced to face Everton in the final next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a Sullay Kaikai brace saw Crystal Palace win 2-1 at Bromley in a friendly.
The Premier League side opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Jonny Williams chested Chung-yong Lee's pass down for Kaikai to score from close range.
And the visitors doubled their advantage just past the hour-mark when Kaikai curled a free kick in off the post from 25 yards out, before Bromley netted a late consolation through substitute Daniel Ajakaiye.
Elsewhere on Tuesday evening, Birmingham City overcame Kidderminster 4-0 in their last pre-season fixture before the new Championship campaign begins this weekend.
Two goals from Jack Storer, and strikes by Andy Shinnie and James Vaughan, saw Gary Rowett's side warm up for Saturday's league opener at home to Cardiff City with a comfortable win at Aggborough.
Finally, Chesterfield recovered from trailing at half-time to Liandre Martis' strike to beat a Leicester City XI 3-1 at home thanks to second-half goals from substitutes Ched Evans, Gary Liddle and Jay O'Shea.
