Middlesbrough's pursuit of Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has broken down, according to Sky sources.
Boro had agreed a fee of around £8m with the Bundesliga side, and the Serbia international visited the north Yorkshire club's facilities earlier this month.
Boro boss Aitor Karanka was hoping Subotic would travel to Spain to join up with his squad at their pre-season training camp in Marbella but that is not now expected to happen.
Meanwhile, better news for Karanka is that Alvaro Negredo is likely to join up with the Boro squad later on Wednesday.
The Valencia striker has agreed a one-year loan deal with an option for Boro to buy next summer.
The former Manchester City player is likely to have his medical with Middlesbrough doctors in Marbella.
