Frank Lampard was booed by sections of the home support as he made his first appearance of the season during New York City's 7-0 defeat by rivals New York Red Bulls.
The former Chelsea midfielder was introduced as a 74th-minute substitute during their thrashing, and was booed when he came on, and then again when his name came up on the screen.
Lampard has been out with a calf injury since March, and has had a difficult relationship with New York City fans since his arrival at the club last year.
His side crashed to a humiliating defeat to their rivals on Saturday, equalling the record for the heaviest loss in Major League Soccer history.
City, an affiliate of English Premier League side Manchester City, have invested heavily in a squad featuring several veteran European stars including Andrea Pirlo, David Villa and Lampard.
Pirlo and Villa - who last week, with Lampard, were revealed to be among the top 10 highest paid players in the league - struggled as the Red Bulls ran riot before City's home fans at Yankee Stadium.
