We asked Peter Taylor to pick his 23-man squad for Euro 2016 ahead of Roy Hodgson’s England squad announcement on Thursday.
The former England carteaker boss has gambled on the fitness of both Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck but has a contingency plan that involves a change of role for Wayne Rooney and the introduction of midfielders Jack Wilshere and Danny Drinkwater.
In defence, there's no place for Leighton Baines as Taylor picks Southampton's Ryan Bertrand, while Ben Foster gets the nod as the third goalkeeper.
Here's Taylor's squad in full...
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Ben Foster (West Brom)
Taylor says: "It may be harsh on Tom Heaton I just think Ben Foster's got more experience. I know he's had a few injuries this season but he's fit now, and I think he's a slightly better goalkeeper so that's the route I would go down. As much as Joe Hart is our number one I think you need to push him as much as you can."
Defenders: Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), John Stones (Everton), Danny Rose (Tottenham), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton).
Taylor says: "Danny Rose will start. He's had an absolutely outstanding season and looks the best left-back in England at the moment. Hopefully he doesn't get injured but if we need cover I would go for Ryan Bertrand, simply because he's good enough and he will get more experience being at a major tournament. Leighton Baines has got tremendous experience, I know, I just think we can give a younger player a bit more experience."
Midfielders: Eric Dier (Tottenham), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Ross Barkley (Everton), Raheem Sterling (Manchester CIty), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), James Milner (Liverpool), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool).
Taylor says: "We are not sure about Jordan Henderson, of course. If he's out then I would put in Danny Drinkwater because he has had an outstanding season and deserves the opportunity. There could also be a change in the strikers and then I would put Wayne Rooney with the forwards and bring in Jack Wilshere. I'd be very happy with this because the Arsenal man's a very different type of midfielder that could easily come on as a substitute and be very different to what the opposition have had to deal with.
"In terms of Wilshere and Henderson, I'm just a little bit concerned about going to a major tournament with two players that have had a lot of injuries this season."
Strikers: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal), Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool).
Taylor says: "If Danny Welbeck doesn't make it then Rooney will come into the strikers. People will say I'm just trying to find a place for Rooney but I think his goal record, his experience and his know-how is a must for the squad. He's not a must to be starting but he's a must for the squad.
"It will also be really handy for Roy and us if Daniel Sturridge is fit and well because he's one of the best strikers around."
