Paul Merson and Matt Le Tissier: How they make Super 6 predictions

Graphic

We asked Soccer Saturday's top two tipsters Matt Le Tissier and Paul Merson to explain how they make their selections ahead of the Super 6 £1m jackpot.

Merse currently sits top of the pundits' Super 6 league table having correctly predicted 12 correct scores over the course of the season, nailing two exact scorelines and another two results in last weekend's Sky Bet Football League edition.

That haul saw him leapfrog Matt Le Tissier, who now trails by one correct score ahead of the Super 6 £1m weekend.

We asked the Arsenal and Southampton legends whether they go with head or heart when it comes to making their predictions…

Head

Merse says:

I have an advantage over the other lads because I know the lower leagues better than them. I played in them and I still follow them more than the other lads to be honest, so that gives me an edge.

I look at the league positions, the first side's home record then if the away team are scoring goals on the road. If they're not then I do like a 1-0 or a 2-0 home win.

If all the favourites win then you've got a chance but then again you're probably going to have to share the prize, like the other week when 39 players split the jackpot.

I would have been pig sick if that had been me. Don't get me wrong, it's still good money, but I'd have been out looking at a convertible BMW and come home with a Skoda.

Le Tiss says:

I'd say I'm a head over heart kind of guy. I'm obviously lucky that I get to watch a lot of football and have to study the stats as part of my job.

There are some stats that are more useful than others though. For example, if a team is creating a lot of goal-scoring chances then they're going to get results.

There's a lot of information out there these days but the key is working out which stats are really important.

Heart

Merse says:

I always think - and I genuinely believe it - that the person that wins the £1m this weekend will have no idea about football.

I've given out plenty of Super 6 cheques and I'll go to them, 'How did you pick that?' and they've got no clue, no clue about football.

Let somebody that knows nothing about football to pick them for you and then you'll win it. Get your auntie or uncle to pick them out.

We get too deep, we study up, analyse this and that and then a team who haven't scored in weeks go and win away.

That's why we love football and that's why it's great, because it's so unpredictable week-in, week-out. Up to a couple of weeks ago the home teams were getting well beat by away teams in the Premier League.

Manchester United should turn up to Watford on Saturday and wipe the floor with them but they won't. Everybody will be on Chelsea this weekend, and I'm a Chelsea man, but can you be saying confidently that they'll win when they've lost eight football matches this season?

Le Tiss says:

Southampton are obviously the exception and the one time where I'll let my heart lead my predictions, although they've been going pretty well for me this season.

I'd always listen to somebody who watches a team every week over somebody who analyses the stats and gets too caught up in them.

Some stats can be misleading. Possession stats are the main one. A team can have 60 per cent possession but if the majority of that is in their own half then that's not a reflection on their chances of winning the game.
