Republic of Ireland have joined England, Wales and Northern Ireland in qualifying for Euro 2016 - but could they all be drawn together for the group phase?

The answer is no.

While England are seeded into Pot 1,  Republic of Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland will all be in Pot 4 due to their coefficient rankings.

Teams will be drawn into six groups of four on December 12, with one team from each pot in each group.

This means England could be grouped with one of Republic of Ireland, Wales or Northern Ireland - but not two or all three.

It also means Republic of Ireland, Wales and Northern Ireland will not be in a group together.

England's Pot 1 status ensures they will avoid France, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Belgium in the group stages, but there are some dangerous teams in Pot 2. Italy would be the toughest opponent. They have a habit of raising their game for major tournaments - as England know all too well, having suffered defeat to the Azzurri in the past two major tournaments.

Pot 3 includes Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden but facing Robert Lewandowski's Poland could be an even trickier proposition. The striker top-scored in qualifying with 13 goals in 10 games, and he has been equally rampant for Bayern Munich. England have a good record against Poland, but they showed they can trouble the best with a 2-0 win over world champions Germany last year.

If the European Qualifiers taught us anything, it is that Wales are becoming a formidable opponent under Chris Coleman. A win and a draw against much-fancied Belgium were the highlights of their qualifying campaign, and no other team in Pot 4 boast players of Gareth Bale or Aaron Ramsey's quality.

A recap of England's journey through the European Qualifiers

England's best-case scenario

After two 2-0 wins in qualifying, England would fancy their chances of beating Switzerland again if they are drawn together next summer. Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri gives them a touch of quality in attack, but they are one of the weaker teams in Pot 2.

From Pot 3, Romania would be a favourable draw. Euro 2016 will be only their second major tournament in the last 15 years, and, although they recorded the best defensive record in qualifying, they will be one of the underdogs in France.

Slovenia are ranked 64th in the FIFA world rankings but should they fail to overturn their first-leg play-off deficit to Ukraine, England would be happy to see 36th-placed Albania named in their group. While Albania shocked Portugal with an away win in the first game of qualifying, they won just one of their last four Group I fixtures - against Armenia.
