David Moyes' Real Sociedad have been dealt a blow after striker Carlos Vela was forced to undergo knee surgery.
The striker, who has scored seven league goals for the club this season, tore the meniscus in his right knee during a 4-1 defeat at Real Madrid on Saturday.
A club statement said: "During the game that took place in Madrid, Vela sustained an injury to his right knee.
"The tests done have revealed a tear in in internal meniscus. Having reviewed the situation, we have opted for the player to undergo an operation.
"Carlos will undergo surgery today (Monday) and it will be carried out by doctor Mikel Sanchez. And we will issue a medical update once the surgery is completed."
Real Sociedad are 13th in the league, but only four points above the relegation zone as Moyes looks to get their season heading in the right direction.
