Sunderland's Duncan Watmore has received support from Real Madrid in his comeback from a second serious knee injury.

The 23-year-old suffered cruciate ligament damage just weeks after returning from a 10-month spell on the sidelines with a similar problem.

Watmore's father, Ian, revealed his son had received a touching boost from European giants Real Madrid on Twitter in his road to recovery.

"Dear Duncan. On behalf of our president, Florentino Perez, and those who work for Real Madrid, we would like to wish you a smooth and speedy recovery from your knee injury," the letter, signed by the club's director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueno, read.

Ian Watmore paid tribute to Real following their sentiments, calling it a "classy" gesture, but suggested any surprise transfer move from the La Liga giants was unlikely when the first response asked if the club were chasing his son.
