Rudy Gestede is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a freak injury that required an operation to a dead leg.
The Middlesbrough striker needed surgery to relieve the pressure on his thigh after a clash of legs with a team-mate in training.
Boro manager Garry Monk said he was shocked to see Gestede's leg start to bleed again after lengthy compression and ice treatment following the incident this week.
While the 28-year-old's rare injury continues to bleed, Gestede is significantly more comfortable following the pressure-relieving surgery.
Monk was unable to put a timeframe on his return at Thursday's news conference but the Benin international will certainly miss at least a number of weeks.
