Dundee United midfielder Blair Spittal remains confident the team can avoid relegation to the Scottish Championship.

Spittal believes United's 1-0 victory over Airdrie in the Scottish Cup fourth-round on Saturday can be a springboard for avoiding the drop.

The 20-year-old settled the tie 11 minutes from the end when he scored direct from a free-kick to give United their first win in 10 matches.

And the cup tie also provided brief respite from a dismal league campaign, which sees the Tannadice club sit 11 points adrift at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

Spittal reckons there is renewed confidence in the dressing room now ahead of Friday's visit of champions Celtic.

"We have been saying for a while that we need a win to kick-start our bid to beat the drop," Spittal said.

"Not a lot of people are backing us, but we've just got to take confidence from this game and build on it for the Celtic game.

"This win has got to give us confidence. The clean sheet was a bonus as well.

"We have been conceding sloppy goals lately, but we kept it tight against Airdrie and we kept the ball really well in the second half especially.

"We've not been getting the breaks lately, but hopefully we can go on a run now."
