McClaren's men trail leaders AZ by eight points
Steve McClaren's FC Twente missed the opportunity to close the gap at the Eredivisie summit as they failed to hold a lead at NEC Nijmegen.
Twente are now eight points adrift of leaders AZ Alkmaar following a 1-1 draw which saw them take a 23rd minute lead through Marko Arnautovic.
A solitary goal looked to be enough for long spells but with 12 minutes left on the clock, John Goosens struck for NEC.
Youssef El Akchaoui was dismissed for a professional foul at the death but the home side were nonetheless able to hold onto a share of the spoils.
The result leaves NEC in ninth, while Twente's title aspirations continue to fade as AZ close on the Eredivisie crown.
