Vokes can't save Wales

Wales slipped to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Montenegro, despite a second-half goal from Sam Vokes.

Toshack's men defeated in Montenegro

A second-half strike from Sam Vokes could not prevent Wales from slipping to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Montenegro. The returning Danny Gabbidon committed a foul in the penalty area with 30 minutes gone and Stevan Jovetic coolly converted the spot-kick. As the away side looked to get back into the game, Simon Vukcevic played a superb ball through to Radomir Djalovic, who applied a neat finish for a 2-0 lead. Half-time substitute Vokes made an impact almost immediately when he rose above the Montenegro defence and found the net with his header, but Wales hardly threatened thereafter. Wales, led on to the field by new captain Joe Ledley, welcomed back central defender Gabbidon to the starting line-up for the first time in almost two-years. The visitors made a bright start and Robert Earnshaw had the ball in the back of the net with less than a minute gone, but the striker was adjudged to have committed a foul in the run-up.

Command

Montenegro started to take command shortly after, and Savio Pavicevic's bouncing effort was saved well by Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. Wales fashioned their first real chance of the match when Aaron Ramsey dinked the ball in to Simon Church, who struck a left foot volley wide of the post. Ledley burst into the area after a neat build-up on 24 minutes but his left foot shot did not trouble Vukasin Poleskic in the Montenegro goal. Gabbidon's return turned sour after half-an-hour when he brought down Vukcevic in the area and Jovetic sent Hennessey the wrong way to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Earnshaw had a great chance to level five minutes later when he turned away from his marker and found himself with only the keeper to beat. But Poleskic got down well to smother his shot and the danger was averted. An elusive run by Vukcevic threatened the Wales goal again but the midfielder's left-foot shot was straight into Hennessey's arms.
Goals
On the stroke of half-time, Wales slipped to a two-goal deficit. Vukcevic played a superb through ball and Djalovic finished from a tight angle. The visitors were back in the contest five minutes after the break when Sam Ricketts sent in a hanging cross and Wolves forward Vokes rose brilliantly to head home. Montenegro almost restored the two-goal advantage after a stunning strike Vladimir Bozovic cannoned of the post and Vukcevic could not find the target with the rebound. But Wales could not find the spark that would ignite the comeback and eventually the hosts took control of possession once again. Jovetic had a good chance to double his tally for the night but he shot wide of Hennessey's near-post when in a promising position in the penalty area. The changes then came thick and fast for both teams and the contest began to peter out as a result. John Toshack's side became increasingly disjointed as the match entered the closing stages and the hosts had no problem closing out victory in the first ever meeting between the two countries.
