Middlesbrough suffered a 2-0 defeat to Villarreal at the Riverside Stadium in their final pre-season friendly.
Daniel Ayala saw an early goal disallowed before the Spanish side took the lead in the 23rd minute through Gerard Balaguero.
New signing Kike looked impressive for Boro, but they fell further behind on the stroke of half-time when Matías Nahuel Leiva smashed home.
Boro had no answer after the break but were able to hand a debut to new signing Emilio Nsue, who joined from Real Mallorca on Friday.
They begin their Sky Bet Championship campaign at home to Birmingham next week.
