Malawi stunned Algeria in the African Cup of Nations by recording a shock 3-0 win in Group A. Making their first appearance in the competition for 26 years, Malawi comfortably beat the Desert Foxes, who will play England in the World Cup this summer. With nine European-based players in their starting line-up and the game kicking off in mid-afternoon, Algeria struggled in the stifling heat and gifted their opponents the opener. Goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi and Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra collided as they tried to clear a pass and the ball ran to Russel Mwafulirwa who scored into an empty net. Malawi increased their lead in the 36th minute when Moses Chavula crossed from the left and Ivis Kafoteka headed home. Davi Banda scored early in the second half to complete Malawi's first ever win at the tournament and send them top of the group after Angola and Mali drew on Sunday.
