Macclesfield crashed out of the Football League after 15 years as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Burton Albion on Saturday.
The Silkmen's fans are now demanding to know what had happened to the £800,000 in transfer fees that had come and gone in the last 12 months. Goals had dried up since the sale of Tyrone Barnett and Emile Sinclair with the team yet to win in 2012, a 22-game barren run. Ben Futcher's header rattled the bar inside the opening 20 minutes and skipper Nat Brown sent a close-range volley narrowly over the bar as the hosts started brightly. However, Burton underlined their threat when Calvin Zola flashed a shot just wide from 25 yards. The Silkmen were denied a penalty in the 53rd minute when the ball struck Patrick Ada on the hand but referee Oliver Langford waved play on. With the home crowd growing restless and their attention turning to chairman Mike Rance, their mood worsened with eight minutes to play when Jimmy Phillips crossed for Jacques Maghoma to stroke home. Zola's calm finish from Chris Palmer's delivery in stoppage time rubbed further salt in the wound.
