Brisley and Gritton score to hand Macclesfield success
Championship side Blackpool were eliminated from the Carling Cup at the first round stage by League Two outfit Macclesfield.
Two opportunist goals either side of the intereval set up a potential money-spinning second-round clash for the Cheshire team as Blackpool squandered a succession of goalscoring opportunities.
Blackpool's Ben Burgess had a goal disallowed for offside, and centre-back Ian Evatt then hit the underside of the crossbar.
A goal from the visitors looked to be looming but Macclesfield took the lead in the 25th minute when youngster Shaun Brisley poked the ball through the legs of stranded Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks.
Blackpool's Gary Taylor-Fletcher then missed the easiest chance of the game as he headed over the bar from four yards.
The key moment came in the 58th minute, moments after fellow captains Terry Dunfield and Keith Southern had been dismissed for fighting.
Macclesfield were quickest to regroup, and when Blackpool failed to clear a free-kick from Jamie Tulley a minute later it was striker Martin Gritton who headed home from close range.
