Liverpool earned their first victory under Jurgen Klopp at the fourth attempt by beating Bournemouth 1-0 in the Capital One Cup fourth round.
Nathaniel Clyne scored the winner on 17 minutes, finishing off from close range after Joao Teixeira's improvised effort was cleared off the line.
Bournemouth had several opportunities to get on the scoresheet throughout the game, with Adam Bogdan forced into three fine saves from Cherries forward Junior Stanislas.
But Liverpool - without Christian Benteke, as well as Daniel Sturridge - held on, and Klopp avoided the unwanted tag of becoming the first Reds boss not to win in his opening four games.
The Cherries, without a win since their third-round victory at Preston last month, started brightly, and were nearly ahead after five minutes but for Bogdan, who did superbly to block Stanislas' effort from 15 yards after being put through on goal by Harry Arter.
Roberto Firmino forced a fine save out of Adam Federici on 17 minutes, letting fly from 20 yards, but the hosts got the opening goal only moments later.
Teixeira was put through on goal by Firmino, and after the Portuguese midfielder's back-heeled effort was cleared off the line by Adam Smith, Clyne finished off into the empty net from six yards.
Bournemouth almost equalised instantly through Stanislas, whose header at point-blank range was saved well by Bogdan, before Stanislas' free-kick near the end of the half from an acute angle was brilliantly tipped wide by the Liverpool goalkeeper.
Shaun MacDonald saw his header from a corner drop just the wrong side of the left-hand post after the break, while at the other end Firmino's low shot from just inside the area drifted just wide.
Substitute Lucas' fierce shot from 25 yards stung the fingers of Federici with 13 minutes remaining, before Teixeira's free-kick was again well saved by the Australian in the Bournemouth net.
Eddie Howe's side had a fine chance to equalise in the last minute of stoppage time, but Bogdan was at his best again to deny Matt Ritchie, who had poked an effort towards goal from 12 yards.
