Mustapha Carayol scores as Leeds beat Rotherham 2-0 in the FA Cup

Mustapha Carayol's moment of brilliance lit up an otherwise dour FA Cup clash between Leeds and Rotherham, which saw Steve Evans celebrate a 2-0 win over his former club.

It was some impact by debutant Carayol, who joined on loan from Middlesbrough on Friday, as he slammed a swerving shot into the top corner from the angle of the penalty box just before half-time.

Leeds were gifted a second in the 90th minute as Souleymane Doukara nipped in after confusion between Lee Camp and Frazer Richardson as the hosts booked their spot in the fourth round.

Although Rotherham's focus is firmly on Sky Bet Championship survival, defeat means they have not won an FA Cup third-round tie since 2001/02.

This West versus South Yorkshire derby is not known for its intense rivalry, but it has been stoked up this year by a manager swap that has seen Evans take position in the Elland Road dugout that was occupied by current Rotherham boss Neil Redfearn last season.

Redfearn's first return came in the Championship in November and he was denied a car parking pass by bitter owner Massimo Cellino but had the last laugh as his side won 1-0.

Then, after Redfearn had questioned Evans' summer recruitment when he was still at the Millers, the Scot responded with a barbed taunt suggesting his successor was only a game away from the sack.

However, there was no sign of hostility as the pair shared a hug before kick-off and Redfearn watched on as his side shaded a first half-hour that was far from a classic.

The hosts had to wait until just before half-time for their best spell and it resulted in them taking the lead in the 45th minute.

Carayol, who scored a stunning goal for Huddersfield against the Millers less than a month ago, was at it again as he let fly with a swerving shot from the corner of the penalty area.

It was always going to need something of that quality to make the breakthrough, but it did not make the early stages of the second half any more of a spectacle.

Leeds looked the more likely to add to their lead as Sam Byram's curling shot tested Camp, with Liam Cooper's header also forcing the Millers goalkeeper into a stop.

Rotherham mounted some sort of attempt to get back into the game and spent large parts of the second half camped in Leeds territory, but they were undermined by lack of clear goalscoring threats.

Emmanuel Ledesma's free-kick which went over the bar and a weak Jonson Clarke-Harris shot were their best efforts as Leeds advanced trouble free.

Minutes after Stuart Dallas' shot crashed into the crossbar,

it was Leeds that nicked a second after some generous defending allowed Doukara to walk the ball home after Camp failed to collect a ball that Richardson was shepherding back.
