Huddersfield v Liverpool preview: Jurgen Klopp says Reds need to learn from defeats

Jurgen Klopp and David Wagner will renew their friendly rivalry when Liverpool travel to play Huddersfield on Tuesday (kick-off 8pm).

Liverpool come into the game off the back of two defeats against Swansea in the league and West Brom in the FA Cup, so will be looking to get their top-four bid back on course with a win in Yorkshire.

Klopp is not too worried about the consecutive defeats as Liverpool had enjoyed an 18-match unbeaten run prior to losing in Wales.

"It is how football is, how life is. Two weeks ago we had an 18-game unbeaten run and then you lose twice and everything feels different," added Klopp.

"That's OK because for us it is important you feel it and don't think it is not important.

    David Wagner,

"We have to make it much better from now on. If you use a defeat to learn from then it is still bad but it is OK. If you don't learn from it you are silly.

"I don't look ahead four or five weeks and think 'that's an important game' so it has not changed for Huddersfield.

"We need to show we are really ready for that. Huddersfield is a special place, the whole city fights for the league.

"They don't expect brilliant football, they expect a proper fight and that is what Huddersfield Town is ready to deliver.

"We need to deliver as well."

    Team news

Huddersfield midfielder Danny Williams is an injury doubt for the home side.

Williams was forced out of Saturday's FA Cup stalemate against Birmingham with a dead leg and will be assessed, but centre-half Terence Kongolo is expected to overcome a knock.

Wagner is likely to recall the likes of Aaron Mooy, Alex Pritchard, Christopher Schindler and Jonas Lossl, who did not feature at the weekend.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could be in line for his first start in over a month.

Henderson played half an hour in Saturday's FA Cup defeat to West Brom after four weeks out with a hamstring problem and comes into contention for a place in the starting XI.

Klopp is likely to field the same squad as defender Ragnar Klavan and midfielder Adam Lallana have not recovered from muscle injuries.

    Opta stats

    • Huddersfield are winless in their last 11 matches in all competitions against Liverpool (D3 L8) - last beating them in November 1959 in the second tier.
    • Liverpool have lost their last two Premier League away games played on a Tuesday, failing to score in both (0-1 vs Hull in Apr 2015 and 0-2 vs Leicester in Feb 2016).
    • This will be the 58th ground that Liverpool have played at in the Premier League; they've won at 53 of their previous 57 (more than any other side), failing only at Bloomfield Road (L1), Bramall Lane (D2 L1), the City Ground (D3 L2) and Wembley Stadium (L1).
    • No side has scored fewer second-half goals in the Premier League this season than Huddersfield (7). They have also conceded more after the interval than any other side (30).

    Merson's predictions

Huddersfield try and play out from the back a bit too much for me if I'm being honest. It's a great philosophy, don't get me wrong, but there's a line and I think they overplay a bit too much.

I know they beat Manchester United at home but when they've played against the other big boys, they've been blown away. West Ham also blew them away a couple of weeks ago so I think Liverpool, on the big pitch at the John Smith's Stadium, will just have too much for them.

Huddersfield won't play like Swansea did last week and Jurgen Klopp's side will exploit that.
