Huddersfield 2-1 Bristol City: Nahki Wells ends five-game winless run

Nahki Wells scored for the first time since October as Huddersfield clinched a first victory in six matches with a 2-1 victory over Bristol City.

The Bermudian striker, who has been linked with a January move away from the John Smith's Stadium, scored his fourth goal of the season to get town back to winning ways.

The early-season pacesetters had slipped down the Championship table after a run of just one win in eight matches.

But Wells cashed in on a mistake by goalkeeper Frank Fielding to give Town the three points.

Elias Kachunga gave the hosts an early lead before Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham broke his recent goal drought to score his first in five matches to level the scores.

Huddersfield were on the attack from the start and Wells and Kachunga exchanged passes, but Wells' attempted lob was too ambitious.

Rajiv van La Parra then had a shot charged down before Town went ahead in the 10th minute.

Skipper Tommy Smith produced a driven cross from the right and Kachunga dived to head home from inside the six yard box.

Huddersfield should have doubled the lead just five minutes later when Smith took down a Jonathan Hogg pass to beat Lee Tomlin and set up Wells. The striker turned his man, but fired straight at Fielding.

The Robins almost equalised just past the half hour when Aden Flint rose well to meet a Luke Freeman corner, but the header just missed the top corner.

Abraham made it 1-1 with his 13th goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Christopher Schindler was booked for a foul on Tomlin and Freeman's free-kick undid the Huddersfield defence.

Flint headed it back into the area and Aaron Wilbraham, adjudged onside, squared the ball for Abraham to slot home.

Van La Parra was denied by a great full-length save from Fielding two minutes before the break before Kasey Palmer lashed over.

Both sides went for it in the second half but Town came out on top.

Referee Keith Stroud was forced into a key decision in the 49th minute when Fielding came out of his area.

Fielding, under pressure from Wells, clearly handled the ball outside the area, but Stroud consulted his assistant before deciding on a yellow card and a free-kick right on the edge of the box.

With Town fans still baying for a sending-off Chris Lowe's free-kick came back off the wall.

Huddersfield had wanted Fielding sent off, but they might have been grateful he was still on the field when he blundered to gift Town the winner in the 59th minute.

Korey Smith's back pass was too strong and Fielding mis-controlled with Wells lurking.

Wells stole the ball and rounded Fielding before stroking into an empty net to give Huddersfield a much-needed lift.
