Grimsby 0-2 Crewe: Tom Lowery, Charlie Kirk earn comprehensive victory
Saturday 7 September 2019 17:25, UK
Crewe continued their excellent start to the season as goals from Tom Lowery and Charlie Kirk gave them a 2-0 win at Grimsby.
Grimsby were handed the perfect opportunity to take the lead when Luke Hendrie was bundled over by Daniel Powell in the penalty area but James Hanson's 28th-minute effort from the spot was saved by Dave Richards.
Both teams continued to cancel each other out during the first half but Crewe took the lead almost immediately after the break.
With Grimsby dawdling on the ball, the visitors nicked it back in the 46th minute and played it on to Lowery, who fired into the far corner of the goal.
The hosts came close to hitting back, with Matt Green inches away from Jordan Cook's ball across goal, while Hanson saw a cross come back off the crossbar.
With Grimsby pressing for an equaliser, Crewe broke in the first minute of stoppage time, with Kirk rounding James McKeown before rolling the ball home to secure the visitors' fifth win of the season.
