Jamie Paterson's breakaway goal earned Bristol City a ticket to the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 win at rain-drenched Fleetwood.

The deadlock was broken after 18 minutes when City showed their Championship quality for the first time.

Gustav Engvall's through-ball was too good for Fleetwood, with Cian Bolger losing his man and allowing Paterson to take full advantage, making no mistake one-on-one with Alex Cairns.

It should have been two moments later, Ashley Eastham's slip allowing Joe Bryan to break in from the left, but Engvall's shot was cleared off the line by Bolger after Cairns got a touch.

Chris Long might have levelled affairs on the half-hour, set free by Devante Cole, but his effort across the face of goal rolled beyond the far post.

City continued to dominate after the break, putting pressure on the Fleetwood goal without creating any real chances to extend their lead.

Bryan went as close as anyone, leaving Victor Nirennold in his wake and rattling the angle of post and crossbar, the ball somehow failing to cross the line.

At the other end Long hit the side-netting with a deflected effort on a rare Fleetwood move into enemy territory.

Fleetwood threw caution to the wind with time running out, with four strikers called into action in a bid to salvage the tie.

But Uwe Rosler's men were unable to batter down the visitors' door, City holding out to end a 13-game unbeaten run for the hosts.

Bristol City will now go to Burnley in the fourth round following their win over Sunderland.
