Fleetwood 1-1 Barnsley (2-4 on penalties): Adam Hammill hits winning spot-kick

Adam Hammill smashed Barnsley into the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final, sealing a tense penalty shoot-out victory against Fleetwood following a 1-1 second-leg draw.

The first leg had also finished 1-1 and there was no separating the sides at Highbury Stadium on Thursday night, with the game going straight to penalties after 90 minutes.

In the shoot-out that ensued, the hosts looked in the box seat when Josh Scowen's penalty was saved.

But when Adam Davies denied Conor McLaughlin and Amari'i Bell, it was down to Hammill to seal it for the Tykes and he smashed the ball in off the crossbar to send Barnsley to Wembley.

The visitors bossed matters in the opening 45 minutes and had a very solid claim for a penalty denied when Sam Winnall went down in the box following a nudge from Fleetwood skipper Nathan Pond.

The Tykes looked like they might not need the approval of referee Eddie Ilderton to grab the lead, as Josh Brownhill was a whisker away with a 30-yard screamer from the left channel that was tipped over.

The hosts' chances were limited as Jamille Matt squandered an opportunity at the near post when a poor clearance fell to his feet.

Barnsley continued to dominate, with Winnall spurning another good chance before the hour, floating the ball over the bar after a superb pass from Marley Watkins.

Hammill was then denied by another timely Maxwell save, but Fleetwood could not hold out forever and Barnsley finally grabbed the lead when Conor Hourihane drove in from the left and his shot deflected off Pond and under Maxwell.

The tie looked over but substitutes David Ball and Ash Hunter combined to haul the hosts level with 10 minutes remaining.

Ball cut in from the left and crossed for Hunter to sweep home from five yards, and Pond had a chance to win it for the hosts but his close-range header was cleared off the line.

At the other end, Ashley Fletcher missed a sitter with moments remaining after a skewed clearance by defender Joe Davis opened the door for the Manchester United youngster.

Penalties followed the final whistle, with Hammill booking the Reds' place at Wembley against Sky Bet League Two side Oxford United on Sunday, April 3 (kick-off 2.30pm), live on Sky Sports.
