Costly miss for Cerci

Alessio Cerci missed a penalty as Torino were held to a 2-2 draw at Fiorentina to miss out on the last Europa League spot.

Alessio Cerci missed a last-gasp penalty as Torino were held to a 2-2 draw at Fiorentina to miss out on the last Europa League qualifying place on the final day of the Serie A season. With the score at 2-2 with seconds remaining and Toro needing a win to hold onto sixth position, Cerci saw his spot-kick saved by Fiorentina goalkeeper Antonio Rosati. Toro, who were without the league's top scorer Ciro Immobile through suspension for the encounter in Florence, end the campaign one point behind Parma, who beat Livorno 2-0 to finish sixth. Fiorentina, meanwhile, had already guaranteed themselves direct qualification to the Europa League with a fourth-place finish. Giuseppe Rossi had put the hosts ahead in the 57th minute from the penalty spot before substitute Marcelo Larrondo pulled Torino level 10 minutes later. Fiorentina regained the lead through substitute Ante Rebic in the 79th minute but Jasmin Kurtic equalised six minutes from time. Rossi, who earned his first start since recently returning from a right knee injury that had kept him sidelined for four months, had the first chance of the game in the 10th minute. His stinging drive from 30 yards was saved by Torino goalkeeper Daniele Padelli. Padelli was called again into action midway through the first half to clear Facundo Roncaglia's long-range attempt. Toro put a good move together on 30 minutes when Omar El Kaddouri found Kurtic in the box and his right-footed attempt was saved by Rosati. The game came to life in the second half when the referee pointed to the spot after Fiorentina's Giuseppe Vives had brought down Juan Guillermo Cuadrado inside the area. Rossi struck his spot-kick towards the bottom right corner of goal and out of Padelli's reach to put the Viola ahead. Fiorentina's joy was short-lived as the visitors pulled level when Cerci fed Larrondo in the box and his close-range shot beat Rosati. The home side continued to attack and were rewarded when Cuadrado found Rebic in the heart of the area and his powerful shot beat Padelli to make it 2-1. With six minutes remaining, Kurtic's free-kick stunned Rosati and ended in the top right corner of the net. Toro were desperate to find the winner and were handed a lifeline when Roncaglia brought down Paulo Barreto in the box. However, Rosati guessed correctly and kept out Cerci's effort towards the far post to deny Toro a vital win.
