Augsburg only just managed to keep hold of their place inside the top six, but a 0-0 draw at home to Cologne leaves them still with work to do if they are to play in Europe next season.

Chances were few and far between in Bavaria with neither side wanting to take any risk, and the goalless draw was a fair outcome.

It leaves Augsburg only a point ahead of seventh-placed Werder Bremen with three games of the season still to play, while Cologne are still not mathematically safe, just six points above the relegation play-off place.

With only two wins in their last 11 games, Augsburg's dream of playing in Europe next season was on the verge of being shattered with Cologne one of the six clubs still able to catch them in the final four games of the season.

Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl had therefore called on his club's fans to help lift them to victory, and closer to a first ever European qualification.

They responded by filling the Augsburg Arena, and soon providing the cauldron atmosphere Weinzierl wanted.

It inspired the home team, but did not seem to daunt the visitors as they delivered an open battle in which neither side could have gone in front.

After Timo Horn punched away a Raul Bobadilla free-kick, Markus Feulner saw his effort cleared off the line by Domenic Maroh in what proved to be the closest either team would come to breaking the deadlock before half-time.

There was little improvement after the break with neither side keen to take a gamble and impose themselves on the game.

Augsburg did carve out a few chances, but Horn was in fine form in the Cologne goal to keep out chances from Jeong-Ho Hong, who missed the target with another opportunity.
