Champions come from behind to secure opening win

Egypt opened the defence of their Africa Cup of Nations title by defeating Nigeria 3-1 in their opening Group C match at the Ombaka Stadium on Tuesday. The six-time champions brought to an end a 23-year-old winless run against the West Africans, handing them the perfect start to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament. Against the run of play, Nigeria took the lead after 14 minutes through Chinedu Obasi, who powered home a left-footed thunderbolt from outside the box beyond goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary. Emad Motaeb drew Egypt level in the 33rd minute when he capitalised on a quick counter-attack as he rounded Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama and slotted the ball into an empty net. Hassan gave the champions the lead in the 54th minute when he powered home a deflected effort past Enyeama from outside the penalty area. Substitute Mohamed Nagi put further emphasis on the win when he drilled in a stoppage-time third to the delight of the 32,000-strong crowd.
