Fraser Fyvie and Jason Cummings on target as Hibernian down Cowdenbeath

Fraser Fyvie and Jason Cummings struck in the first half to ensure Hibernian recorded their fifth win on the bounce to consolidate second place in the Scottish Championship.

Hibernian dominated the early exchanges but clear-cut chances were at a premium during the opening period of the game.

Dylan McGeogh’s cross from the left flank was met by the head of Fraser Fyvie midway through the first half, forcing Robbie Thomson to make the first save of the match.

But Hibs didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring with Fyvie drilling the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area on 32 minutes after receiving David Gray’s pass.

And they doubled their advantage two minutes later following a bizarre goalmouth scramble where Cummings appeared to get the last touch.

Hibs had a strong penalty shout when Cummings was barged over in the area just before the break but the referee was unmoved as the visitors took a two-goal lead into half-time.

The visitors won a flurry of corners in the early part of the second half but were unable to take advantage of some nervy defending from Cowdenbeath.

Kenny Adamson fashioned a chance for the home side but the defender was unable to get Cowdenbeath back into the game, firing high and wide with a first-time effort.

Frank Djedje then went close for the visitors but his shot was blocked before Robertson fired wide from distance after being teed up by Scott Robertson.

Hibs went close to a third late on through Martin Boyle but the on-loan striker was beaten to the ball by a defender as the match ended 2-0, stretching Hibs’ unbeaten run to 15 matches.
