Former Fleetwood striker Jordy Hiwula scored a first-half winner against his old club as Coventry beat off their play-off rivals with a 2-1 win that might have ended the Cod Army's dreams and enhanced their own promotion credentials.
Coventry pounced early doors after a defensive mix-up between Leeds loanee Lewie Coyle and Fleetwood goalkeeper Alex Cairns.
Coyle's back pass from a tight-angle on the left left Cairns scrambling but Amadou Bakayoko was alert.
Cairns' clearance cannoned back off the Coventry attacker and trickled home in just the sixth minute.
But Fleetwood bounced back as Ched Evans, who was named as skipper for the first time, popped up at the back stick to bundle the ball home after Paddy Madden's strike rebounded back off the bar in the 33rd minute.
But ex-Fleetwood forward Hiwula haunted his former club as he curled the ball home to restore Coventry's lead in the 42nd minute.
Both sides had chances in the second half but it was Coventry who held on to climb further above Fleetwood and move within three points of sixth-placed Doncaster Rovers.
