The hosts were gifted a lifeline to halve the deficit on the stroke of half-time as Jordan Jones was felled in the box before Charlie Wyke converted his first goal of the season from 12 yards.
Wyke restored parity with his second as he scored under David Harrington from Dylan McGeouch's through ball seven minutes after the restart.
But Mayor ended any hopes of a famous comeback victory as the bouncing ball fell kindly for him to fire through a sea of bodies with 20 minutes remaining.
