Bristol Rovers 1-0 Cardiff (AET): Chris Lines hits stunning winner
Thursday 11 August 2016 23:34, UK
Chris Lines struck a stunning 30-yard winner in extra-time as Bristol Rovers beat Cardiff 1-0 in the EFL Cup first round.
In a game of a few chances, Lines smashed in the only goal with five minutes to go for the Sky Bet League One side to set up a second-round tie against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
For Cardiff boss Paul Trollope, it was a disappointing return to the side he managed for five years from 2005-10.
Cardiff started the better as they dominated the opening exchanges, but created very little against their League One opposition. In fact, it was Rovers who had the only real chance of a rather mundane first half after 28 minutes.
Right-back Daniel Leadbitter teased one up to the far post for Matt Taylor to nod back across, but somehow goalkeeper Simon Moore and Sean Morrison combined for Cardiff to keep Stuart Sinclair from being able to tuck the ball in from point-blank range.

Rovers continued as the better side after the break as Cardiff laboured in the second 45 minutes, but were mostly limited to long-range efforts by the Championship side.
Neither side really threatened to score as the game dragged into extra-time, and it took until the 115th minute for the deadlock to be broken, when Lines picked up the ball 30 yards out before thumping an unstoppable drive into the top corner and send the home fans wild.
