Belarus too hot for Iceland in opening game of tournament

Belarus got their European Under 21 Championship off to a perfect start thanks to a 2-0 victory against 10-man Iceland in the opening game of the tournament. Andrei Voronkov gave Georgy Kondratiev's side the lead from the penalty spot with 13 minutes remaining at the Aarhus Stadion in Denmark. Stanislav Dragun sailed into the box before being clipped from behind by Aron Gunnarsson. The midfielder was duly given his marching orders and Voronkov rolled the ball home from 12-yards. Belarus, who reached the finals courtesy of a dramatic play-off success against five-time champions Italy, were soon in firm control of the game. And after Aliaksandr Perepechka and Stanislav Dragun went close to making the game safe, they made sure of the points with three minutes remaining. Substitute Maksim Skavysh settled the contest as he raced onto a lofted pass from Perepechka before neatly clipping the ball past goalkeeper Haraldur Bjornsson. Belarus now return to the same venue to face hosts Denmark on Tuesday, while Iceland will aim to secure their first points against Switzerland in Aalborg.
