Austria 0-2 Hungary: Szalai and Stieber score in Euro 2016 Group F opener

Hungary marked their first match at a European Championship since 1972 with a surprise 2-0 victory against 10-man Austria.

A first international goal for Adam Szalai since December 2014 and Zoltan Stieber's late strike meant Hungary claimed all three points in Tuesday's Euro 2016 Group F clash in Bordeaux.

Austria started the game the brighter side, but Szalai was the man to break the deadlock in the 62nd minute after some wonderful combination play with Laszlo Kleinheisler.

Aleksandar Dragovic was sent off in the 66th minute after two yellow cards, and with Austria's defence stretched, Stieber was able to score a cool chip in the 87th minute.

It was also a historic night for former Crystal Palace goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, who became the oldest player to ever play in a European Championship, aged 40 years and 74 days.

And Kiraly, who had an excellent game, was put to the test straight from kick-off as David Alaba had one of the two best chances of the first 45 minutes.

In just 32 seconds, Alaba rifled a shot from outside the box which went past Kiraly, the ball bouncing and smashing off the post.

The Bayern Munich midfielder, who was playing at central midfield, had another attempt just nine minutes later but Kiraly was able to comfortably collect.

And with the game's tempo settling down after the first 10 minutes, Hungary grew in confidence with Zoltan Gera getting Hungary's first real chance.  The former West Bromwich Albion midfielder received a knock-down from Szalai and his shot was tipped wide by Robert Almer.

There was an appeal for a penalty from Martin Harnik who went down in the box after Attila Fiola was able to make a clearance in the box, but no spot-kick was awarded.

In the 33rd minute, Szalai muscled his way past Dragovic, but was then tripped up by the Austria centre-back, who received the first yellow card of the evening.

And two minutes later, Zlatko Junuzovic received a ball knocked down by Marc Janko, and hit the ball on the half-volley - but Kiraly was able to palm the ball away and over the bar.

Just under 10 minutes later and Marko Arnautovic played a wonderful one-two with Junuzovic. The Stoke City forward sent the ball across the mouth of the goal, but Harnik was unable to make a clean connection.

And just a minute before half-time, Balazs Dzsudzsak has a great chance to score as he picked up the ball in space down the right. He closed down on goal but dragged his shot wide on his weaker right foot, just past the left post.

The second half kicked off with Austria starting the brighter once again, as dangerous crosses into the box from Alaba, then Arnautovic, were missed by everyone.

But in the 63rd minute, Hungary finally broke the deadlock following a neat one-two between Szalai and Kleinheisler. Szalai sent the Hungarian support into raptures as he slid the ball past Almer to give his country a surprise lead.

Then, just two minutes later, Austria did find the net through Martin Hinteregger, but the strike was ruled out following a nasty challenge from Dragovic moments earlier, which meant a second booking for the centre back, and a red card.

Seven minutes later, Almer produced a great save for Austria as he tipped an effort from Krisztian Nemeth, which looked destined to go in, just wide of the post.

With Austria pressing for a win and down to 10 men, spaces opened up - and in the 87th minute, former Aston Villa and Yeovil player Stieber was able to break their defensive line on the counter-attack as he coolly chipped Almer and doubled Hungary's lead to seal the tie.

Five minutes of added time saw Hungary play down the clock and earn a historic win for manager Bernd Storck and his team.
