Dutch giants suffer play-off defeat

Ajax failed to qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League following a goalless draw with FC Twente in their Eredivisie play-off second leg at the Amsterdam Arena. The home side, who were without suspended defender Jan Vertonghen, trailed 2-1 from the first leg where a Blaise N'kufo brace allowed Twente to cancel out Luis Suarez's opener. And a goalless home draw means Ajax, who dominated much of the second leg but were unable to find a breakthrough, have failed to progress and Twente will now enter next season's Champions League at the third qualifying round. In a tight first-half Ajax could not find a way back into the tie as neither side were capable of mustering a goal in the first 45 minutes. Ajax's frustrations continued into the second half as they were unable to find a way past a resolute Twente defence. The aggregate win means Twente have stopped Ajax, who recently appointed Danny Blind as their new technical manager, from recording a hat-trick of victories in the Eredivisie play-offs. ADO Den Haag secured the final place in next season's Eredivisie with a 2-1 win over RKC Waalwijk in their play-off decider. After draws in the first two games, the third remained goalless in the Hague until Richard Knopper struck for the hosts after 74 minutes. Yuri Cornelisse made it two from the spot after 83 minutes and, though Benjamin De Ceulaer pulled one back with two minutes to play, ADO held on.
