Liam Hughes opened his account for the season to hand Cambridge their first away win in four as they beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1.
The U's attacking midfielder smashed home from Sullay Kaikai's free-kick after Kwesi Appiah cancelled out Matt Tubbs' opener for Wimbledon after just 19 seconds. Tubbs, on loan from Bournemouth, latched onto a long ball forward to round goalkeeper Chris Dunn and slot home his ninth league goal of the season. Cambridge drew level 11 minutes later thanks to Appiah, who scored three goals for Wimbledon last season during a short loan spell. The Crystal Palace loanee curled a sublime shot from the edge of the box past James Shea in the Dons goal. Adebayo Akinfenwa missed a glorious chance to give Dons the lead just before the hour, somehow firing wide from close range after Greg Taylor slipped in the box. And the hosts were made to regret that miss less than a minute later when Kaikai's free-kick was met by Hughes, who saw his first effort blocked before smashing home the rebound.
