Celtic won their first trophy of the Brendan Rodgers era with a 3-0 victory over Aberdeen in the League Cup final at Hampden.

Tom Rogic and man of the match James Forrest netted in the first half to set the Hoops up for the club's 100th trophy, before Moussa Dembele's penalty ensured he scored in every round of the competition.

The favourites dominated possession in the opening stages and finally created a chance when Stuart Armstrong slipped a pass to overlapping left-back Emilio Izaguirre and his cross found the head of Dembele, but Aberdeen 'keeper Joe Lewis made an instinctive block and Andrew Considine cleared the rebound.

But three minutes later, Jozo Simunovic strode into the Dons half and his forward pass was cut out by Ash Taylor, but the Celtic defender was first to the loose ball and found Rogic (16) with a superb second pass. The midfielder skipped passed Graeme Shinnie to curl a wonderful shot inside the far post beyond Lewis.

Aberdeen came close to a quick equaliser when James Maddison delivered a free-kick from the left and Considine was denied by Crag Gordon, as the Celtic stopper palmed away a glancing header.

Forrest (35) then dragged the ball a couple of inches wide from 25 yards after Patrick Roberts had been forced across the front of the penalty area by Considine.

The Celtic winger was more successful with his next attempt 90 seconds later as he collected a pass from Rogic, who had twisted away from Maddison on the touchline in his own half, and Forrest raced 20 yards towards Anthony O'Connor before dispatching an early shot from just inside the box into the goalkeeper's right corner.

In the early stages of the second half, Celtic worked the ball across the box with Forrest picking out Roberts at the back stick and his header was flicked towards the other post by Scott Brown, but Dembele could not generate enough power as he tried to nod his effort inside Lewis.

Aberdeen then enjoyed their best spell as Izaguirre deflected a Kenny McLean header wide for a corner and Forrest later made a timely sliding challenge as Shay Logan was about to shoot inside the Celtic box.

At the other end Forrest crashed a shot from 25 yards past the upright and Rogic tested Lewis from similar distance with a crisp drive.

The pair then linked as Forrest raced on to a threaded pass from Rogic and was brought crashing to the deck by Dons defender O'Connor on 64 minutes, seconds before Dembele calmly sent Lewis the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Celtic almost added a fourth on 85 minutes when Forrest turned away from Maddison and beat Considine to set up Armstrong with a square pass inside the box, but the midfielder sent his shot a foot wide from eight yards.

Aberdeen were denied a consolation two minutes from time when Gordon held a curling shot from Maddison, meaning Celtic have gone through the competition without conceding a goal.
