The Welsh Rugby Union says it is "surprised" by the Six Nations decision not to sanction England's Joe Marler for verbally abusing Samson Lee at Twickenham.

Marler was caught on referee Craig Joubert's microphone calling Wales' Lee a "gypsy boy" in Saturday's 25-21 win for the hosts.

However, Six Nations rugby accepted the prop's explanation following an investigation, meaning he will be available to play in England's Grand Slam decider against France in Paris on Sunday.

Marler, who also escaped a suspension for striking Rob Evans during the game, released his own statement following the incident, saying he apologised to Lee at half-time during the win, which he says was accepted, and revealed he was reprimanded by coach Eddie Jones.

Despite that, the WRU admitted the decision had taken them by surprise as the Welsh squad prepare for their final Six Nations clash against Italy in Cardiff on Saturday.

A statement from the WRU said: "We are surprised by the decision of the Six Nations disciplinary hearing. We stand by our belief that that there is no place for the use of racist language in sport.

"Clearly this incident has raised broader issues for the game of rugby which require follow up and which we are undertaking directly with Six Nations. Our focus now is on preparing for the final weekend of the championship and giving the Welsh public the win they deserve."
