England flanker Tom Wood and Harlequins hooker Dave Ward have exchanged angry words on Twitter over Chris Robshaw.

England and Harlequins captain Robshaw has come under heavy criticism following the hosts' failure to make it out of the pool stage.

There are questions marks against Robshaw's decision-making under pressure, and also whether he is England's best openside flanker.

Ward was angered by a headline in the Daily Mail which read: "I'll be captain", with a caption "Wood makes pitch for job if Robshaw is axed."

After England's victory over Uruguay in their final match of the World Cup, Wood was asked if he would take the captaincy if it was offered to him.

He replied: "We'll cross that bridge if we come to it. I haven't been asked and I don't resent that. I love playing for England and take every opportunity as it comes."

He was also quoted in the Mail article saying: "He [Robshaw] knows he's got the backing of the group. Whatever you say about him as a player and whoever else you talk about I've always backed Chris because he's a good, honest person who fronts up and gives his best for the team, day in, day out."

Ward reacted to the newspaper article with a Tweet: "Reading tomwood678 article in the Mail, with friends like that who needs enemies? How about the 47 pens you gave against Wales?"

Wood replied: "What exactly has upset u? You seem to have acquired a stronger voice since our last chat?"

Ward hit back: "Voice has always been strong just know when 2 use it. I can teach u sometime if you want, kicking a man when he's down is never the 1."

Wood responded: "Direct message me ur number so we can have a chat. Who's been kicked? What article? Ring me and stop talking tough on here."

Ward then posted a video clip of a game between Harlequins and Northampton in which Ward rips the ball off Wood. He posted: "Lesson 1 how to turn the ball over."

Wood then tweeted: "Ok that's enough. I'm assuming your account has been hacked or you've lost a bet #no bottle."
