Crackentorp loves it around here and, though he's never won over the trip, he produced an outstanding effort when runner-up in the Northumberland Plate. Mount Athos won the Melrose Handicap over the C&D in 2010 and returned to action after a long break to land a Class 2 handicap at Newmarket on his first start for Luca Cumani. The one problem for him is the going as he's only won on fast ground or Polytrack and he was behind Never Can Tell in last year's Cesarewitch. The latter is another who has shown his best form on much quicker ground than he'll face here and he was well beaten on testing ground in the Chester Cup. This hasn't been a good race for three-year-olds in recent years but Suraj comes here with a fine chance as this very promising stayer has been a wide-margin winner on both starts when facing soft ground. Motivado hated the heavy going in the Northumberland Plate and is better than that but this can go to HIGH JINX, who was having only his sixth start when beating Anatolian in a tough Newmarket handicap and though stepping up in trip looks certain to be suited.
