In depth
Verdict
Viva Ronaldo is selected to get off the mark at the third time of asking despite the presence of Carnaby Haggerston, who shaped with real promise on his racecourse debut. Viva Ronaldo entered many a notebook after a very promising racecourse debut at Chester, the third having subsequently scored. He then re-appeared over this course, where he travelled strongly but ultimately found little when asked. The winner of that event, Thunderous Mood is highly regarded by connections so in hindsight it may not have been a bad effort. If Paul Hanagan can get Viva Ronaldo to relax mid-race, he should be capable of opening his account. Carnaby Haggerston was strongly supported to turnover Dabbers Chief on his racecourse debut. He did run very green inside the closing stages and the impression was that he could do with an additional furlong than what is on offer here. Every Second separated two Richard Hannon juveniles on his second outing. The winner of that event River Rye left the form down slightly at Pontefract (possibly a non-stayer) subsequently but the third did win what was a weak Lingfield maiden since. Bees River lined up for the York event where the selection finished second but stumbled shortly on leaving the gates, dislodging his rider. He had showed some promise in a weak Doncaster maiden, doing his best work in the closing stages. It is hard to foresee any of the remainder landing it, although Mel Brittain's juveniles have been a credit to him this season and his Sea Crest is certainly worth keeping an eye on, being a half-brother to the smart handicapper Ceremonial Jade. Viva Ronaldo is the selection to land the opener.
