    In depth

    Verdict

The Paul Blockley-trained Wessex was reported to have been very ill after his penultimate start, so did very well to follow up at Southwell just over a fortnight ago. He remains an interesting runner at this level and is the first to monitor in the betting. Kew The Music and Raymond's Pride are forwarded as alternatives if the percentages do not speak favourably of the selection today. The last named has dropped to a very handy mark despite only being lightly campaigned since last spring. However, he has started to show that this trip is now suitable for him and he has solid claims in this company. So too does Kew The Music, who comfortably held Merdiff on his way to winning over course and distance last month. However, he needs everything to drop just right for him and his style of running will always leave his supporters on the edge. Acomb is 4lb higher than last week's victory over an extended mile and will no doubt attract his share of interest. However, he may struggle to make all in this tougher company and he is passed over on this occasion. Which brings us back to Wessex, whose task is made easier by the 3lb claim of today's rider. The five-year-old's connections obviously saw plenty of potential when they picked him up for ¿6,000 in a claimer here last November. And having already repaid that investment with a little bit of interest, Wessex does not have much to find to extend his profitability today.
