A competitive seven-furlong handicap in which Arc El Ciel gets the vote ahead of, in no particular order, Spark Up, Barzak, Whippasnapper, Game Guru and Pawn In Life. There are only two course and distance winners in the line-up, these being Arc El Ciel and Spark Up. The former is six-pounds higher in the ratings than for his last success, but was only just denied from a one-pound higher mark than today's when he last ran. He has to be considered. The latter is lightly raced and now just two pounds higher in the ratings than for that course win. His chance also has to be respected. Grey Pearl looked as though she might make up into a decent animal at two but recent form gives her a bit to find with Arc El Ciel. Warden Warren races quickly under a penalty after beating Arc El Ciel by half-a-length on New Year's Eve, but the selection is weighted to get his revenge. Of the others, Yorker is back to a winning mark but that did come nearly three years ago, although he has won more recently than that, and Barzak is back to near a winning mark. Danielle's Lad is very well weighted on his Turf form, although he needs to improve on the bare evidence of all-weather form. Whippasnapper is back to a winning mark, so will have supporters and Game Guru is certainly well weighted on the very best of his Southwell form. This leaves Pawn Life, who certainly gets in at the right end of the handicap and is only four-pounds higher in the ratings than for his Southwell win in December. Bear him in mind too. Overall, though, we'll stick with Arc El Ciel.
