In depth

Verdict

Merrymadcap gets the call ahead of Rio and Williams Well. William's Well carries a penalty for his Southwell win but needs to build on that, although he comes here in good heart. Merrymadcap is three pounds above a course and distance winning mark and, given that he has had a seasonal pipe-opener, can go well. Luna Landing is well-weighted based on winning Turf form but lacks all-weather experience, Oscillator seems to have a little to prove, Pactolos Way may have to also along with Fantasy Ride, while Highest Regard needs to turn the clock back to 2005 if he is to score. Pop Music is another that needs to keep the improvement coming but Rio, who used to be trained in Ireland, showed plenty of promise on his first run for John Balding last time and, given that he should strip fitter for that effort, is one that could go well. Overall, though, we will stick with Merrymadcap.
