VASILIEV is another on today’s card with strong claims for the Clive Cox yard. He’s placed in all three starts so far and was clear of the rest when runner-up at Leicester last time. Rated 89, he sets a decent standard for the others to aim at. Al Battar wasn’t beaten that far when only sixth at Kempton but the remainder with experience are hard to recommend. The Pastoral Bear makes little appeal but fellow newcomer Fiery Mission could figure as a half-brother to three winners who all scored for Sir Michael Stoute.
Al Battar (IRE) 10-1 (9-2) Mid-division, headway over 1f out, never on terms, 6th of 14, 2 1/2l behind Set Piece (9-2) at Kempton 1m stks (5) pol in Dec.
Closer Than Close 50-1 (9-2) Mid-division, edged right over 2f out, hanging right over 1f out, some late headway, never dangerous, 5th of 11, 10 1/2l behind Tapisserie (8-11) at Salisbury 7f stks (5) sft in Jun.
Fiery Mission (USA) Noble Mission colt out of Quickfire.
Vasiliev 11-10fav (9-3) Close up, ridden and unable to quicken over 2f out, driven and headway inside final furlong, stayed on towards finish, 2nd of 10, 1 3/4l behind Keep Me Company (9-3) at Leicester 1m mdn stks (4) gs in Jun.
The Pastoral Bear Pastoral Pursuits filly out of Torrecilla.
Uncertain Smile (IRE) 20-1 (8-10) Took keen hold, prominent, ridden over 2f out, soon beaten, 4th of 7, 11l behind Be More (8-10) at Goodwood 1m fll stks (4) sft in Jun.
