In depth

Verdict

This test should suit COMPTON BLUE better than the seven furlongs he tackled on debut and he's taken to get the better of Kheleyf's Silver and Hand Painted amongst others. The draw in six is far from ideal but Ryan Moore will have his wits about him and will hopefully be able to get a decent early pitch. The selection was weak in the market ahead of a modest Newbury maiden but it was a little surprising to see him start off over seven given that he's a half-brother to the smart sprinter Edge Closer. Kheleyf's Silver has plenty of speed and has shown a decent level of form; if she maintains that standard here then she should make the frame again from her high draw. Hand Painted was turned over at odds-on last time but that came at Brighton which is not the most straightforward of tracks and he may yet be able to confirm his debut promise. Mary West has ground to make up on Kheleyf's Silver but she's improving with experience and could do so. Compton Blue also needs to improve but is taken to make the requisite progress.
